Bhullar eyes PGTI Player's Championships titles

Wednesday August 12, 09 : The British Open experience and the breakthrough title on Asian Tour have done a world of good to Gaganjeet Bhullar and the strapping Kapurthala golfer is banking on his shipshape game and confidence to clinch the PGTI Player's Championships title here on Sunday.
"The last few weeks have been great for me. I have a totally different mindset now after having won my first event on the Asian Tour. I am high on confidence," said Bhullar, who won his maiden Asian Tour title in Jakarta last month and nearly won Brunei Open title before losing in a playoff.
Bhullar was happy with the course even though he foresees weather gods playing pranks during the tournament.
"The course is playing really well at Eagleton. The rough is up so it is going to be quite challenging. The greens are in great shape. The wind and rain are going to be major factors this week. The winning score could be close to 15 under," he said.
On his own chance, he said, "I'm striking the ball very well at the moment and my putting has also been good over the last few weeks. I finished tied 17th during my last event at Eagleton in October last year. So I am keen to do well here this time around."
It, however, will not be a cakewalk for Bhullar since Mukesh Kumar, (2007-08 PGTI Order of Merit champion), is also fancying his chances.
"Victory at the last PGTI event in May this year had done wonders to my confidence. However, I took a total break from the game in the last two months and did not practise too much. I did this in order to be physically and mentally fresh for the second half of the season. I now need to get into tournament mode very quickly so that I can have a successful week at Eagleton," Mukesh said.
Ashok Kumar too is relishing the opportunity and believes hitting straight would be the key in the tournament.
"It's my first event at Eagleton and the conditions here seem to be ideal for a week of intense competition. The greens are tricky and tough to read and the rough provides a big challenge. The fairways are narrow, so if you miss the fairway, you're in for trouble as it will not be easy to recover from the rough," he said. |
